The camera appears to test great, I will update in a year or so if I’m still using and liking it. Install was not bad, but still took about 45 minutes. There were some screws that were tough to get to without removing the camera for the mount, and the screws are a very soft metal, but other than that, it went great! Everything lined up and all hardware needed was provided. There is just a little figuring out to be done since the instructions for install leave a bit to be desired. The video is great and connected right up when turned on.

Viewing Angle NOT As Claimed

I bought and tested four backup/rearview cameras; Yakry, Amtifo, Rohent, and Dohonest. Each of their viewing angles varied, but none of them could be considered “wide-angle” cameras. None of them could be used as BOTH a back-up camera AND a rearview mirror camera. That is; 1) the camera could be aimed down to include seeing your RV’s bumper, but it would only see back 10-25 ft and couldn’t see traffic behind you (unless you were at a stoplight or were a millisecond from being rear-ended), or 2) the camera could be aimed to see the horizon and all traffic behind you, but it would only see forward a short way and you couldn’t see your bumper. In other words, every camera could only be used as a back-up camera OR a rearview camera, but could NOT be used for BOTH functions. Put another way, none of them compete with Furrion cameras. You get what you pay for.

I have seen other reviewer’s photos of their camera monitors for some of these cameras and the viewing angles were much better than what I experienced, but as I mentioned, none of the cameras I tested performed that way. I’m not sure why that is.

The manufacturers claim viewing angles of 120º, 150º, or even 170º, while one just says “wide-angle”. I measured the viewing angles and distances. Here’s what I found:

YAKRY: 84.3º horizontal viewing angle, when aimed to see the bumper the vertical viewing angle would only see rearward 11.1 ft from the bumper.
AMTIFO: 89.4º horizontal viewing angle, when aimed to see the bumper the vertical viewing angle would only see rearward 13.0 ft from the bumper.
ROHENT: 93.5º horizontal viewing angle, when aimed to see the bumper the vertical viewing angle would only see rearward 15.3 ft from the bumper.
DOHONEST: 105.2º horizontal viewing angle, when aimed to see the bumper the vertical viewing angle would only see rearward 26.5 ft from the bumper.

None of the viewing angles were anywhere near the claimed viewing angles. Not even close. Talk about false advertising!

Each camera’s 7” monitor had a great, high-def, 1080, picture and the setup Menus were very close to each other. The menu functions varied and some functions didn’t work as advertised but the system was still useable. The adjustable green, yellow, red distance graphic was only useful when the camera was aimed at the bumper. This function was worthless if the camera was aimed higher to include traffic behind you.

All of the cameras had the necessary parts to connect to the Furrion-ready housing and wiring. All of the cameras were easily installed in less than 30 minutes.

But the limitation in the viewing angle of every camera forces you to make some decisions;
– Which camera to buy? (The Dohonest has the best viewing angles.)
– Use the camera as a back-up camera?
– Use the camera as a rearview camera?
– Do you even want to buy one of these cameras? (I’m returning them all!)

If you decide to buy one of these cameras and are thinking about which way to aim it—back-up or rearview—consider this. If you count up all the hours you will be driving your rig, how much time is spent driving on the road versus how much time is spent backing up? I think you will get the most out of the camera as a rearview unit. You’re going to be able to see that guy who is tailgating you before you hit the blinker and start to slow down to make a turn, or change lanes. Whereas if you’re backing up your partner can hop out and help or you can get out and check your clearance yourself until you get it parked. To me, the consequences of a mishap at 50-60 miles per hour with other vehicles moving at the same speed all around you far outweigh bumping into a parking stanchion, tree, or other vehicle at 1 or 2 miles per hour!

One option you may consider is this. A couple of the manufacturers offer additional equipment at no charge. All you have to do it ask for it. You could get an SC card, a side-view camera, or even an additional back-up/rearview camera for free. So why not mount two cameras on the back of your RV; one aimed at the bumper and one aimed at the horizon. Because every one of the cameras have monitors that can show up to four cameras in the system. This way, you could have your cake (a back-up camera) and eat it too (have a rearview camera, as well) and it’s still much cheaper than a Furrion.

This camera system is a great deal. It works great and it’s very durable. I don’t think there will be any problem with it lasting for years out in the weather with the metal housing for the camera. Even if I do end up having to replace it every few years it’s still hands-down, a better deal than the furrion camera system. I found out this system works with multiple cameras and I am going to get another one to set up on my bumper of the RV for a second viewing angle. I’ll update with more pictures when I get that installed. You can even view this live while you’re driving down the highway it doesn’t have to be in reverse, which is awesome to see blind spots.

I purchased this system to replace a Furrion camera that had a fogged lens due to moisture. A replacement camera only from Furrion was almost $300.

TLDR; The system will satisfy requirements for an inexpensive backup camera well enough.

The system included cables and a nice adapter to allow testing the camera and display before installation. The display and camera worked flawlessly while testing. Having that ability is definitely a nice touch.

The installation manual itself is not that helpful. It doesn’t describe camera installation at all– you have to figure it out. There are YouTube videos that help. The manufacturer’s videos have good descriptions of the menus and configurations, but you’ll have to search to find other videos with physical installation of the camera. The pamphlet included does have enough detail for basic testing and configuration.

Installation of the camera wasn’t too hard, though the power adapter plug for Furrion didn’t work. I am somewhat mechanical and have done automotive wiring. The installation may or may not be harder for you.

I’m not sure if it was the reversed polarity that some reviewers mentioned or the incomplete connection requiring shaving the connector down. I just cut the connectors off and wired it directly using some wire nuts. The “Adapter” for the camera is just a plate that goes on the front of the Furrion mount. The camera still requires a fairly large bracket on top of the plate. Pro-tip: Mount the bracket on the plate without the camera before you mount the plate. They provide small bolts to mount the bracket, but you have to be able to reach the back of the bracket.

Once the power was working, there was no issue with the camera or display. My camper is 37 feet long, and the truck adds another 15 feet or so, but there was no issue with connectivity or dropped signal. The camera and display are very clear. Of course, only a 7-inch monitor, so you don’t really need the advertised HD quality. The camera was automatically recognized and it was easy to add the guide lines for backing using the menus. The sunshade (already mounted) does help seeing the display in sunshine as well. The lighter adapter and the bit of cable on the monitor were long enough that I didn’t need to use any of the testing cable for the installation.

I have two issues with the camera as it stands. The first is the angle of the lens. Using it as a backup camera at close range is acceptable. I adjusted the angle of the camera so that my spare tire carrier (on the back bumper) was just barely visible on the bottom of the screen. That gives a view of about 10-12 feet behind the trailer. That’s okay, but definitely not as good as the Furrion camera that I replaced. With the Furrion, it had a wide angle lens that let me see the bumper and still see 50-60 feet behind the camera.

The second issue is that the refresh is fairly slow. The transmission delay is enough that the signal is useless at highway speeds. With the short distance the camera sees, the field of view can’t keep up with reality. I had one car come up closely after a stop light this past weekend. It was already beside me before the camera showed it pulling up to my bumper.

I’m hoping to solve both problems with a second camera. I will use one camera, pointed more straight back as a rear view camera while driving and the downward pointing camera strictly as a backup camera. That wouldn’t be necessary if the camera had a bit wider angle lens, but it doesn’t. The manual says there is a promotional second camera… I guess I will see. It’s been two weeks and so far my email has gone unanswered.

Overall, this is a good value. You will get what you pay for, but it may be lacking if you are comparing it to more expensive systems. The cost makes it a decent risk. The system is advertised with a two-year warranty. Hopefully I won’t have to test the warranty response or customer service for any other issues. As it stands today, I would buy it again.
